Udaipur, Jan 19, 2026: Apple is partnering with Google to bring advanced artificial intelligence capabilities to Siri, with a major upgrade expected later in 2026. Under a multiyear agreement, Apple will use Google’s Gemini AI models and cloud technology as the foundation for its next-generation Apple Foundation Models, according to a joint statement obtained by CNBC.
“After careful evaluation, we determined that Google’s technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models, and we’re excited about the innovative new experiences it will enable for our users,” Apple.
Despite the partnership, Apple emphasized that its AI models will continue to run on Apple devices and through the company’s private cloud infrastructure, maintaining its focus on privacy and on-device processing. Apple declined to disclose financial details of the deal, while Google referred inquiries to the joint statement.
Talks Began in 2025
Reports first surfaced in August 2025 that Apple was in early discussions with Google to use a customized Gemini model for Siri. Bloomberg later reported that Apple planned to pay roughly $1 billion annually for access to Google’s AI technology. The deal indicates increasing confidence in Google's advancing AI initiatives and its comeback against rivals like OpenAI. In 2025, Google achieved its best performance since 2009 and recently overtook Apple in terms of market value. This is the first time since 2019 that Google has overtaken Apple since 2019. Google already pays Apple billions of dollars annually to remain the default search engine on iPhones. That arrangement faced uncertainty after Google was found to have illegally maintained a monopoly in internet search, but a September court ruling avoided a worst-case outcome that could have forced Google to divest its Chrome browser business. This decision will also help Google to further forge partnerships similar to the one it has with Apple.
Apple’s AI Strategy Takes Shape
Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta have invested heavily in AI infrastructure and products, while Apple has remained cautious since the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in late 2022. This partnership is a significant step into large-scale AI deployment by Apple . The pressure has been mounting for Apple to deliver a meaningful AI-powered Siri upgrade. The company previously delayed the release until 2026, acknowledging that the rollout would take longer than expected. Apple currently works with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into Siri and Apple Intelligence for complex queries requiring broader world knowledge. Apple told CNBC that the agreement with OpenAI remains unchanged, though it is unclear how the Google partnership may influence that integration in the future.
Google’s Momentum Continues
Google has steadily advanced its AI roadmap, launching its upgraded Gemini 3 model late last year. In October, CEO Sundar Pichai revealed that Google Cloud had signed more than $1 billion worth of deals through the third quarter of 2025—exceeding the total from the previous two years combined. Following the announcement, Google shares briefly surged past a $4 trillion market valuation before pulling back later in the trading session.
