Aligarh Muslim University professors develop a product which can check blood sugar levels using AI and without drawing blood
November, 25, 2024 - Scientists at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) have developed a device that can detect diabetes by analysing the pupils and membranes of the eyes. This device will eliminate the need to draw blood using a needle to check blood sugar levels and will determine the sugar level in just one minute, they say.
This device has been developed by Dr Hamid Ashraf and Dr Nadeem Akhtar, both associate professors at AMU.
The product uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology and showed an accuracy of 90-95% in experiments conducted on 1,000 people, claim the researchers. First, an image of the patient’s eye pupils and membranes is taken and the device’s AI system analyses the image to determine the sugar level.
They say this method of testing is more effective and faster compared to lab tests, which usually take 10-15 minutes. With this device, the report is available in just one minute and it will save both time and money.
The researchers will apply for a patent for the device but it is not yet decided when it will be available in the market.
The two were honoured for their work by Minister of State for Science and Technology Dr Jitendra Singh.
