Udaipur, January 17, 2026:  Google has launched its Android Emergency Location Service (ELS) in India. The system, which is a significant steps towards faster and more accurate emergency responses is fully operationalised and has been initiated in Uttar Pradesh. The system has been integrated with UP's 112 Emergency Response System.

This life-saving service, as per Google, has been designed to help responders quickly locate people in distress, reducing critical response time in times of emergency.

Android Emergency Location Service Explained

Android ELS, developed jointly by Google and Pert Telecom Solutions in collaboration with the Uttar Pradesh Police addresses one of the biggest challenges in the modern world's emergency services — accurately identifying a caller’s location, especially during panic situations or when network signals are weak.

Unlike conventional location methods that depend primarily on mobile tower triangulation, Android ELS uses a multi-layered location system. It relies on Google’s Fused Location Provider, which combines data from GPS, Wi-Fi, and cellular networks to determine a caller’s precise location.

Key Features of Android ELS

  • High Location Accuracy: Can pinpoint a caller’s location with precision of up to 50 meters.
  • Automatic Activation: The service activates instantly when a user dials 112 or sends an emergency SMS — no additional app or hardware required.
  • Multilingual Support: Shares extra device information such as language settings, enabling emergency operators to communicate more effectively.
  • Drop-Call Reliability: Even if a call disconnects seconds after connecting, ELS can still transmit the caller’s location to responders.
  • Location data is shared directly from the user’s device to UP112.
  • Google does not collect, store, or access the location information.
  • The service remains inactive at all other times and does not track users in the background.

Strong Focus on User Privacy

While privacy remains a core priority of the Emergency Location Service, the feature is strictly limited to emergency situations and activates only when an emergency number is dialed.

With Uttar Pradesh leading the rollout, Android ELS is expected to expand to more Indian states in the future, strengthening the country’s emergency response infrastructure through technology.
