November 02, 2026: Provident Fund (PF) money is deducted from your salary every month. But do you regularly check how much money has accumulated in your account, how much your employer has deposited and how much interest has been added? Many employees only check their PF deductions on their salary slips. However, you can easily check your complete Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) account details online in just a few minutes.

You do not need to depend on your company's HR department to check your PF balance. The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) provides four ways to check your PF balance: its official website, the UMANG app, missed calls and SMS. You can also view your employee contributions, employer contributions, interest, withdrawals and transfers through the EPFO digital passbook.

How to Check PF Balance Through the EPFO Website?

The most detailed way to check your PF balance is through the EPFO Passbook portal. To use this service, you need your 12-digit Universal Account Number (UAN) and password. Your UAN is usually mentioned on your salary slip. If you cannot find it, you can contact your company's HR department.

Follow these steps to check your PF balance:

  1. Open the official EPFO Passbook website.

  2. Enter your UAN, password and captcha code.

  3. Click on the Sign In option.

  4. Select the PF Member ID linked to your current or previous employer.

  5. Your EPF passbook will appear on the screen.

The passbook shows your personal contributions, your employer's contributions, interest credited, withdrawals and transfers between accounts. You can also download the complete passbook for future reference.

If you have worked for multiple organisations, you may see several Member IDs linked to the same UAN.

What Is EPFO Passbook Lite?

EPFO also provides a facility to check a summary of your PF account without opening the complete passbook. Introduced in September 2025, the Passbook Lite feature allows members to view their deposits, withdrawals and total PF balance through the main EPFO Member Portal.

This feature is useful for employees who only want to check their current PF balance and recent account activity without going through the complete transaction history.

How to Check PF Balance Using the UMANG App

If you want to check your PF account using your smartphone, you can use the UMANG app. Developed by the Government of India, the app provides access to several government services, including EPFO facilities.

Follow these steps:

  1. Download the UMANG app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

  2. Register on the app or log in to your existing account.

  3. Search for EPFO using the search bar.

  4. Select View Passbook under the Employee Services section.

  5. Enter your UAN number.

  6. Complete the verification process using the OTP sent to your registered mobile number.

  7. Select your required PF account to view the passbook.

Apart from checking your PF balance, you can also use the UMANG app to access other EPFO services and check your claim status. Depending on the service available, you may also be able to submit claims through the app.

How to Check PF Balance Through a Missed Call Without Internet

You can also check your PF balance without an internet connection. EPFO provides a missed-call service that allows members to receive their latest PF account details through SMS.

Follow these steps:

  1. Call 9966044425 from the mobile number registered with your UAN.

  2. The call will automatically disconnect after a few seconds.

  3. You will receive an SMS containing your latest PF balance and contribution details.

To use this service, your mobile number must be registered with EPFO. Additionally, at least one of your KYC details, such as Aadhaar, PAN or bank account information, must be linked to your UAN.

EPFO provides this missed-call service free of charge.

How to Check PF Balance Through SMS

Apart from the missed-call facility, you can also check your PF balance through SMS. For this, you need to send a message in a specific format from your registered mobile number.

Follow these steps:

  1. Open the messaging app on your mobile phone.

  2. Type EPFOHO UAN in the message box.

  3. Send the SMS to 7738299899 from your registered mobile number.

  4. You will receive an SMS with your latest PF balance and contribution details.

If you want to receive the information in a language other than English, you can add the relevant language code at the end of the message.

For example:

  • Hindi: EPFOHO UAN HIN

  • Tamil: EPFOHO UAN TAM

If you do not add a language code, the response will generally be in English.

Which Method Should You Choose to Check Your PF Balance?

Each method has its own benefits. You can choose one depending on how much information you need and whether you have internet access.

Method What You Need Information Available
EPFO Passbook Website UAN and password Complete balance and transaction history
Passbook Lite EPFO Member Portal login Balance, deposit and withdrawal summary
UMANG App UAN and OTP Passbook and account details
Missed Call UAN-linked mobile number and KYC Latest balance and deposit details
SMS Registered mobile number and UAN Latest balance and contribution details

If you want to check your complete transaction history, the EPFO Passbook website is the most suitable option. However, if you only need to know your latest PF balance, the missed-call or SMS service is more convenient.

Why Is Your Latest PF Deposit Not Showing in the Passbook?

Sometimes, PF money is deducted from your salary, but the latest contribution does not immediately appear in your EPFO passbook. There is no need to panic, as the update may take some time.

After deducting PF from your salary, your employer must deposit the required contribution with EPFO and submit the relevant return. The process of updating these details in your passbook may take some time.

First, check the date of the last contribution shown in your passbook. Then compare the details with your salary slip. If the deposit for a particular month is still missing, contact your company's payroll or HR department to confirm whether the PF contribution and return for that month have been submitted to EPFO.

Another important point is that PF interest is generally credited annually rather than every month. Therefore, it is normal if you do not see a change in the interest amount every month.

Some companies manage their employees' PF through their own trusts. These are known as exempted establishments. In such cases, the complete PF account details may not appear in the EPFO online passbook. You may need to request your PF statement directly from your employer or the concerned trust.

What to Do If You Forget Your UAN or Password?

If you cannot remember your UAN, first check your salary slip, as many employers mention it there. If you cannot find it, contact your company's HR department. You can also use the Know Your UAN option on the EPFO Member Portal to retrieve your number.

If you have forgotten your EPFO password, visit the login page and select the Forgot Password option. Follow the instructions to verify your details and create a new password.

There has also been a change in the UAN activation process for new members. UAN activation is now available through the UMANG app using Aadhaar-based Face Authentication. The earlier facility for activating UAN through the EPFO Member Portal is no longer available.

How to Keep Your PF Account Secure

Always use the official EPFO website or the UMANG app to check your PF balance. Avoid clicking on unknown links received through WhatsApp, SMS or other messaging platforms.

Never share your Aadhaar number, bank details, EPFO password or OTP with anyone. Be especially careful of people who call you claiming to be EPFO officials and ask for personal information.

You do not need an agent to check your PF balance, and you should not pay anyone for this service.

Experts recommend checking your PF account every few months. If you change jobs, make sure your contributions from your previous and current employers are properly reflected in your account. Spending a few minutes checking your PF details regularly can help you keep track of your retirement savings and identify any missing contributions early.
