IIT Indore Develops Smart Glass That Adapts to Weather

Blocks sunlight in summer, allows it in during winter; could reduce energy consumption in buildings
 |

July 30, 2025 - Scientists at IIT Indore are developing a smart glass that can block sunlight during summer and allow it in during winter. The glass is being made using a special porous organic polymer (POP) that can change its colour and transparency with a mild electric current.

This innovation will help regulate indoor temperatures in homes and buildings, reducing the need for artificial heating and cooling, thereby saving electricity. The technology will help set up eco-friendly houses and buildings. It uses a viologen-based porous organic polymer, which rapidly changes colour and adjusts the transparency of the glass when exposed to electricity.

"What makes the smart glass special is its quick response to electricity. It can change colour and transparency which allows it to block sunlight and heat when needed, or let it in when it’s cooler outside. This smart adjustment helps save energy by reducing the need for air-conditioning or artificial lighting,” an Indore IIT official said.

The research team is currently working with industry partners towards manufacturing of the smart glass within the existing factory setups and allow for large-scale production.
