IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw says the country's Large Language Model (LLM) will be ready within 10 months; will cater to the unique linguistic, economic and social requirements of the nation
January 31, 2025 - India is set to develop its own Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbot in the next 10 months to compete with China (DeepSeek) and the US AI company OpenAI's chatbot, ChatGPT. This announcement was made by Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw yesterday at the Utkarsh Odisha Conclave. By doing this, India will join the ranks of global players like ChatGPT and DeepSeek.
The initiative will be powered by the India AI Compute Facility, which has secured 18,000 GPUs to drive the development of a Large Language Model (LLM) tailored for the country’s needs, the Minister said adding that the country's Large Language Model (LLM) will be ready within 10 months and will be a foundational model available in all Indian languages. The framework for this model has already been created, he informed
Vaishnaw said that computing infrastructure is crucial for AI. India has already achieved its goal of 10,000 GPUs (Graphics Processing Units) and is now aiming to increase it to 18,600 GPUs. GPUs are essential for developing any type of language model, as they require advanced processing power.
“With 18,000 GPUs in place, India is well on its way to building a homegrown AI model that will cater to the unique linguistic, economic and social requirements of the nation,” the IT Minsiter said.
The Minister also said that the plan was to establish AI data centres in Odisha, marking an important step toward strengthening India’s AI ecosystem and digital infrastructure.
