Cloudflare Down: Major Outage Hits X, Hostinger, ChatGPT, Spotify and More

Major global disruption triggers 500 errors across top platforms; Cloudflare investigating core network failure, writes Santhosh Kumar

Nov 19, 2025 - A major outage at internet infrastructure giant Cloudflare on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, caused widespread disruptions, taking down a host of popular platforms including X, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Spotify. Users across the globe were met with "500 Error" messages and blank screens, highlighting the internet's reliance on a few key service providers

The disruption originated from a technical issue at Cloudflare, a company that provides critical security and content delivery services to millions of websites. Cloudflare acts as a protective middle layer between a website and its visitors, helping to speed up service and block online attacks.

When this central hub experiences a problem, it creates a cascading effect, causing failures on many unrelated platforms that depend on it.

Cloudflare's Official Statement

Cloudflare immediately issued a statement confirming the situation and that an investigation was ongoing:

"Cloudflare is aware of and investigating an issue which impacts multiple customers. Widespread 500 errors, Cloudflare Dashboard and API also failing. We are working to understand the full impact and mitigate this problem. More updates to follow shortly."

The “500 errors” indicate server-side failures, meaning the problem was within Cloudflare's network rather than with the websites' own servers.

Security Experts' Concern

This technical failure is not being viewed as just an operational inconvenience. Security firm TraceX Labs described this outage as a "major security incident," which could have a negative impact on many multinational businesses.

Confirmed Status and Recovery

In a latest update on its system status page (Nov 18, 2025, 12:37 UTC), Cloudflare has indicated signs of service improvement. However, the company has warned that customers may continue to observe "higher-than-normal error rates" as their systems fully stabilise.

For the most current information, users can monitor Cloudflare's official status page: https://www.cloudflarestatus.com/

Complete List of Platforms and Services Affected

The outage impacted a wide range of services. Here is a list of major platforms reported to be affected:

  • Social Media & Search: X (formerly Twitter), Gemini
  • AI Tools: ChatGPT, Perplexity, OpenAI services
  • Payment & Business: PayPal, Sage
  • Productivity & Cloud: Amazon Web Services (AWS), Canva
  • Entertainment: Spotify, Letterboxd

Users reported being unable to access their X feeds, while OpenAI's status page confirmed outages for ChatGPT. The outage tracking website Downdetector itself also saw a massive spike in reports and was temporarily affected.

A Recurring Problem for the Internet

This is not an isolated incident. The internet has witnessed several similar widespread outages in recent months owing to technical failures at major infrastructure providers. Outages at Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services (AWS) in October, and a Google Cloud outage in June, similarly disrupted a vast array of popular apps and websites, underscoring the concentrated nature of the modern web's infrastructure.
