RBI Announces Upto Rs 25,000 Compensation for Digital Fraud Victims
RBI proposes compensation up to Rs 25,000 for victims of digital payment frauds up to Rs 50,000; know eligibility, rules and key details of the new framework
Feb 7, 2026 - Owing to the rising cases of fraud in digital transactions, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced a major relief on Friday (February 6). The RBI said that people who become victims of digital payment fraud (UPI, etc.) up to Rs 50,000 will receive compensation of up to Rs 25,000. After the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra said that a detailed framework will be released soon.
Key points of the proposal:

Relief will be available only in fraud cases up to Rs 50,000.

85% of the fraud amount (maximum Rs 25,000) will be returned.

Customers will not be questioned; benefit available even if OTP was shared.

Loss sharing: RBI 70%, bank 15%, customer 15%.

Benefit available only once in a lifetime.

Additional safety measures like delayed payments and extra verification for senior citizens are also being planned.
