SIM-Binding Rules for WhatsApp, Telegram
WhatsApp and Telegram will not work on another phone without the SIM card from January 1, 2027
UdaipurTimes, Oct 24, 2026 - Under a Central Government rule, WhatsApp and Telegram accounts linked to a particular mobile number will work only on the mobile phone containing the SIM card associated with that number. These services will not work on another phone without the SIM card. At present, these messaging services can also be used on another phone without a SIM card through a Wi-Fi connection.
This measure comes into effect from January 1, 2027, with the aim of preventing cyber fraud. Earlier, the rules were expected to be implemented in September 2026. Relevant companies have been directed to make the necessary arrangements by December 31.
The initial provisions said that if WhatsApp or Telegram was used on another mobile phone, the service would stop working after six hours, or users would have to log in again within six hours. However, under the revised rules, WhatsApp and Telegram will not be usable on another mobile phone at all without the associated SIM card.
