UPI Will Stop Working for Inactive Numbers from April 1

Scammers might misuse UPI IDs linked to old numbers

PhonePe UPI Lite Feature

Udaipur, March 22, 2025 - The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) will remove UPI IDs linked to inactive mobile numbers starting April 1, 2025. This means people with such numbers won’t be able to use UPI apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm. NPCI says inactive numbers are risky because some people change their mobile number but forget to update it with the bank. If the old number is given to someone else, fraud can happen. Scammers might misuse UPI IDs linked to old numbers.

Who will lose UPI access?

  • People who changed their number but did not update it in their bank.

  • People who stopped using their number and it got deactivated.

  • Numbers that have not been used for calls, SMS, or UPI payments.

  • Numbers that were reassigned to someone else.

Keep Your UPI Working

  • Keep your mobile number active.
  • Update your new number with your bank if you have changed it.
  • Do this before April 1 to avoid problems.

What will Banks Do?

  • Banks will check inactive numbers and remove them from UPI.

  • They will send warnings before removing UPI access.

  • If users update their number before April 1, their UPI will not be removed.
