WhatsApp has unveiled one of its most significant privacy updates to date with the introduction of usernames, giving users a new way to connect without revealing their mobile phone numbers.

The feature is rolling out gradually and is designed to make conversations more private while preserving WhatsApp's end-to-end encrypted messaging experience. In supported regions, some users can already begin reserving their preferred usernames.

A New Way to Connect

Until now, WhatsApp required users to exchange phone numbers before starting a conversation. With usernames, users can instead share a unique identifier that allows others to contact them without ever seeing their mobile number.

This change is expected to improve privacy, especially when communicating with people for the first time or participating in larger communities.

How WhatsApp Usernames Work

Usernames can be created from the Account section within WhatsApp Settings once the feature becomes available.

Some of the key rules include:

  • Usernames must contain 3 to 35 characters.
  • Every username must be unique.
  • WhatsApp will not provide a public username search directory.
  • Anyone wishing to start a conversation must know your exact username.
  • Users can optionally enable a Username Key, providing an additional verification layer for first-time chats.

In supported conversations, your username may appear instead of your phone number, helping keep your personal contact information private.

Designed With Privacy in Mind

According to WhatsApp, the primary objective of usernames is to reduce unnecessary exposure of users' phone numbers.

The feature is expected to be particularly useful for:

  • Joining community or group chats
  • Contacting someone for the first time
  • Communicating with businesses or creators
  • Networking without exchanging personal phone numbers

Users will have greater control over who can view their mobile number while still enjoying secure, end-to-end encrypted conversations.

Username Reservations Are Rolling Out

With WhatsApp serving more than 3 billion users worldwide, popular usernames are expected to be in high demand.

To help users secure their preferred identity, WhatsApp has begun rolling out username reservations ahead of the wider global release.

To check whether the feature is available:

  1. Update WhatsApp to the latest version.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Tap Account.
  4. Select Username if the option appears.

Since the rollout is phased, the feature may not yet be available on every account or in every region.

Support for Businesses and Creators

WhatsApp also plans to let businesses, creators, organizations, and public brands claim usernames that match their existing identities across Meta platforms such as Instagram and Facebook.

The goal is to provide a consistent digital identity and help users more easily recognize official accounts.

Safeguards Against Impersonation

To reduce the risk of impersonation and fraud, WhatsApp says certain usernames linked to celebrities, government agencies, public figures, and well-known organizations will receive additional protections or restrictions.

The company also encourages users to share their usernames only with trusted individuals.

Similar to Telegram, but With a Different Approach

The announcement has drawn comparisons to Telegram, which has supported usernames for several years.

However, WhatsApp's implementation differs in one important way: there will be no public username directory or account discovery system. Users must know a person's exact username before they can initiate a conversation, reinforcing the platform's privacy-first approach.

Rollout Timeline

WhatsApp is introducing usernames in phases:

  • Username reservations have begun for eligible users.
  • The feature will expand to additional users over the coming months.
  • Eligible users will receive an in-app notification when usernames become available for their account.

The introduction of usernames marks one of WhatsApp's biggest identity and privacy changes since the platform launched, offering users a more secure and flexible way to connect without relying solely on phone numbers.
