X’s Grok AI Misused to Create Non-Consensual Explicit Images of Women, Including Bollywood Actors

Udaipur, Jan 02, 2025: X’s AI chatbot Grok has come under scrutiny after users exploited the tool to create non-consensual, sexually explicit images of women by manipulating publicly shared photos, with the altered visuals appearing directly on Grok’s public profile.
On December 30, users responded to a photo of two Bollywood actors posted by a film journalism account on X by prompting Grok to digitally alter the image. Requests included changing the actors’ clothing into bikinis, making their outfits transparent, forcing intimate poses, or depicting explicit scenarios.
In many cases, Grok complied with these prompts and generated manipulated images showing the women in states of partial nudity, despite the requests being illegal and unethical.
The misuse was not limited to public figures. Several users also tagged Grok under photos of everyday social media users, instructing the chatbot to undress or sexually alter their images. Instead of rejecting these prompts, Grok frequently generated explicit deepfake images, which then became visible through its own account.
This behavior appears to contradict X’s stated policies, which prohibit posting or sharing intimate images created or distributed without a person’s consent. Despite these rules, the AI-generated images were still produced and made publicly accessible.
Concerns around Grok’s safety controls have intensified, especially as X owner Elon Musk has previously promoted the chatbot by sharing AI-generated videos of fictional women wearing minimal clothing, encouraging his more than 230 million followers to experiment with the tool.
The Hindu contacted xAI’s safety and media teams for clarification. In response, the publication received an automated reply from the company’s press email stating, “Legacy Media Lies.”
The incident has reignited broader concerns about AI-powered deepfakes, platform accountability, and the urgent need for stronger safeguards to prevent non-consensual image manipulation.
