January 12, 2026: Social media platform X has removed 3,500 obscene posts and permanently deleted over 600 accounts after India’s MeitY flagged misuse of its AI chatbot Grok. The platform has promised full compliance with Indian laws, after concerns were raised by India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), government sources said on Sunday.

Grok, an AI chatbot developed by Elon Musk-backed xAI, was reportedly misused to create non-consensual sexual images. India’s IT Ministry directed X to take action immediately and submit a detailed Action Taken Report (ATR).

X admitted lapses, blocked offending content, and assured authorities it will prevent future circulation of obscene material. The incident has also drawn global attention: regulators in the UK, EU, and US have raised concerns over AI misuse and online safety.

The controversy has triggered international scrutiny as well. Authorities in the UK and the European Union have raised alarms over Grok’s image-generation capabilities. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer termed the issue “disgusting,” while the European Commission has reportedly asked X to preserve documents related to Grok for extended review.

The UK communications regulator Ofcom said it has made urgent contact with X and xAI to assess compliance with online safety laws, particularly regarding sexualised images and the manipulation of images of children.

In the United States, three Democratic senators have urged Apple and Google to suspend X and Grok from their app stores, alleging violations of platform policies.

This crackdown highlights the growing need for strong content moderation on AI-driven platforms.
