May 12, 2025 – All the 32 airports in the country that have been shut since May 9 have now opened and airlines are expected to resume regular flights soon. The government today, May 12, issued a NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) for resumption of normal civil flight operations.

In a statement on X, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) today said, “In light of evolving circumstances and dynamic airspace conditions, commercial flight operations were temporarily suspended at 32 Airports until 05:29 hrs of May, 15th 2025. It is pleased to inform that these Airports are now fully operational for #CivilAircraft movements with immediate effect.

“Passengers scheduled to travel via these airports are advised to stay updated by checking #FlightStatus directly with their respective airlines and monitor official airline websites for the latest information.”

The airports that have opened now are Chandigarh, Srinagar, Amritsar, Adhampur, Ambala,Awantipur,  Ludhiana, Bhuntar, Kishangarh, Sarsawa, Thoise, Uttarlai,  Naliya, Patiala, Shimla, Kangra-Gaggal, Bathinda, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Hindon, Bikaner, Halwara, Pathankot, Jammu, Leh, Mundra, Jamnagar, Hirasar, Porbandar, Keshod, Kandla and Bhuj.

The temporary suspension was supposed to last until 05:29 hours of May 15, 2025.

The airport shutdown was in the wake of the April 22 Pahalgam attack by terrorists in which 26 people were killed. Following this incident, the government had launched Operation Sindoor to bring down suspected terror camps within Pakistan and PoK. As a result, a number of flights were cancelled or rescheduled and 32 airports were shut down for civilian flights.

Things appear to be returning to near normal after a ceasefire between the two countries was announced on May 10.

The normal operations of the airports and airlines will come as a huge relief for people who were greatly inconvenienced after the military operations forced Indian and international carriers to re-route flights.

The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security has issued a directive that enhanced security measures will continue to be followed at all airports across the country.
