The Indian Railways is set to launch a super app by the end of December. This app will serve as a one-stop solution for all passenger services. It is being developed by the Centre of Railway Information Systems (CRIS) and will integrate with the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC).

Features of the Super App

  • Booking passenger and platform tickets
  • Checking train status

Currently, passengers must use multiple apps and websites for these services. This includes:

  • IRCTC Rail Connect:For train ticket booking, modification, and cancellation.
  • IRCTC eCatering Food on Track: For food delivery to train seats.
  • Rail Madad: For complaints and suggestions.
  • UTS: For booking unreserved train tickets.
  • National Train Enquiry System: For checking train status.

Popularity of IRCTC Rail Connect

The IRCTC Rail Connect app is the most popular among railway commuters, with over 100 million downloads. It is the only platform for booking reserved train tickets, making it essential for travellers.

IRCTC's Revenue and Profit

Private sector travel booking services also depend on IRCTC for train tickets. This reinforces IRCTC's status as a monopoly since most reserved tickets are now booked online.

For the fiscal year 2023-24, IRCTC reported a net profit of INR 1,111.26 crore, with a revenue of INR 4,270.18 crore. Ticketing alone contributed 30.33% to this revenue, with over 453 million tickets booked.
