Aviation Ministry today announced that the cap on domestic airfare will remain in place till November 24, extending if for another three months from August 24. The ministry has also indicated that the date may be revised, depending on the situation.

The ministry had placed a cap on domestic airfare fearing a surge in prices after selected domestic routes were permitted from May 25 in a caliberated manner after the two month lockdown on air travel.

In May, when the routes were being opened up, Hardeep Puri (Union Minister for Civil Aviation) had said that in case of Delhi and Mumbai, the minimum airfare for a 90-120 minute journey will be Rs 3,500 and the maximum would be Rs 10,000. This was operative from May 25 till August 24. Now this has been extended to November 24.

After being grounded for nearly 60 days, the aircraft carriers had lost irrecoverable revenue. Puri had also charted the domestic routes into seven sections based on flight duration ranging from 40 minutes to 210 minutes.
