DGCA Cuts IndiGo Flights by 5%; Reassigns to Other Airlines

Around 110 daily IndiGo flight schedule will be reassigned to carriers including Air India, SpiceJet and Akasa Air

 |

Dec 9, 2025 - The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has cut IndiGo Airlines’ daily winter schedule lights by 5% following a high-level review meeting by the DGCA and the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) chaired by Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu. The DGCA has cracked down on the airline for the operational crisis and said the slots will be now reassigned to other carriers. The 5% reduction will be "especially on high-demand, high-frequency flights, and to avoid single-flight operations on a sector by Indigo", a DGCA notification said.

The 5% cut means that about 110-odd daily IndiGo flights will be assigned to other airlines, including Air India, which have been told by the government to add more flights. Currently, IndiGo operates about 2,200 flights a day.

“Other airlines like Air India, SpiceJet and Akasa Air have been instructed to raise their flight count. Air India is also using wide-body planes on domestic routes to make up for the shortfall,” a government official was quoted as saying by media reports.

Further IndiGo flight cuts may reportedly be in the offing if disruptions continue.

“Operations are stabilising fast, safety remains fully in force, IndiGo is being held accountable, passengers' convenience and dignity are being protected, and long-term measures are underway to take India's aviation sector more passenger-centric,” said the Civil Aviation Minister while speaking in Parliament on the IndiGo crisis.

The Minister has also vowed “very, very strict action” against the carrier once the high-level inquiry ordered by the government gives its feedback.

Meanwhile, IndiGo is reported to be fast returning to near normal. The airline said, "We have optimised our operations and managed to reduce the number of cancellations which are being notified to customers in advance. Our on-time performance has improved to 91% across the network.”
