Aug 22, 2025 - Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Thursday, August 21, announced plans for a 135-seater electric bus powered by flash charging technology. The ultra-modern electric bus, being developed in collaboration with the Tata Group, will feature airplane-style seating, air-conditioning, executive-class comfort and even onboard bus hostesses.

The hostesses, similar to flight attendants, will serve tea, coffee, fruits, packaged food and beverages to passengers, enhancing the travel experience. Gadkari added that the bus will be equipped with all modern amenities and will offer travel fares 30% lower than diesel buses.

The pilot project is currently underway in Nagpur. The Tata Group has also set up a new manufacturing plant in Dharwad, Karnataka, to support this initiative. The goal, the Minister said, is to make public transport more comfortable, affordable and appealing so that more people opt for it over private vehicles.

Gadkari said, "This will bring a revolutionary change in our transport system. People will no longer need to use their private cars to travel to places like Delhi, Jaipur, Chandigarh or Dehradun."

The electric buses will run at an estimated cost of Rs 35-40 per kilometre. Using flash charging, the bus can travel 40 km, stop at a charging station and recharge in just 40 seconds before continuing for another 40 km.
