People flying to their destinations may be in for a piece of good news. In case your flight gets delayed or cancelled and your connecting flight gets affected because of this, you may now be able demand a compensation upto 20,000 rupees from the air carrier company.

Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has put forward a list of rights and responsibilities for air travellers in which the issues of rules regarding flight delays and cancellations are also proposed. DGCA has also clarified that if a passenger is not given boarding card then the airline in question will pay 5000 rupees to the passenger as compensation. It also happens that airlines don’t issue boarding cards to passengers because of overbooked flight and the passengers are forced to take another flight. In such a situation, DGCA says that passengers should be allowed to cancel their flights. DGCA has also proposed that if there is a tarmac delay of more than 2 hours then also the passenger should be allowed to cancel his flight. This rule is restricted to a delay of 2 hours or more.

It has also been reported that Indigo Airlines, Jet Airways and Go Air have opposed these proposals. As per these airlines, the prevailing rules must be continued.
