Govt to Roll Out Electronic Toll Collection on Select National Highways

Tenders have been invited for three toll plazas on the Delhi–Jaipur NH-48

Aug 2, 2025 - The Central Government has decided to implement a seamless Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system on select national highways as an added facility along with FASTag. Under this system, drivers will be able to pay toll fees without having to stop, slow down or stay in a given fee plaza lane. Based on the results and impact of the initial rollout, the system will be gradually expanded to other highways in phases.

This information was shared by Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, in response to a question raised in the Lok Sabha by MP Dr Manna Lal Rawat.

Selection of the highway stretches for ETC implementation have been based on factors such as geographical location, traffic volume, lane alignment and congestion levels.

In Rajasthan, tenders have been invited for the implementation of this system at the Manoharpura, Shahjahanpur and Daulatpura toll plazas on the Delhi-Jaipur NH-48.

The Minister shared that as of now a full satellite-based user fee system is not operational on any National Highway. More deliberations on the system are required owing to concerns around security, privacy and operational control.

"It has been decided to proceed with Corridor/Stretch-based projects for the implementation of the Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) FASTag System (AFS)-based Barrier Less Free Flow tolling," Gadkari informed.

For violations or non-FASTag cases, there is also a proposal to address them through electronic notices (e-notices) under the provisions of the National Highway Fee Rules.
