Udaipur, March 5, 2025 – In a major advancement to environmental-friendly mobility, India has developed the world’s most powerful hydrogen train engine, with 1,200 horsepower (HP). This is more than double the capacity of similar hydrogen trains globally and the highest capacity in the world.  This train will use fuel cells to produce electricity from hydrogen and oxygen, emitting only water vapour.

According to the Ministry of Railways, the country’s first hydrogen train is all set to turn out by March 31.

The Ministry had allocated Rs 2,800 crore to develop 35 hydrogen fuel cell-based trains in the fiscal year 2023-24. Currently, the manufacture of the trains is in progress at the Chennai-based Integral Coach Factory (ICF).  The first hydrogen train will be operated by Northern Railway’s Delhi Division on the Jind–Sonipat route (89 km).

With the introduction of the hydrogen-powered train, India will join the ranks of countries like the UK, Germany, France and China in adopting green transportation technology to support zero-carbon emission goals as a clean energy source.

Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has said that the train developed by the Indian Railways is the most powerful one manufactured by any country. The hydrogen-powered trains built by most other countries have capacities ranging from 500-600 HP.
