February 25. 2025 – Indian Railways is in for a futuristic high-speed transport system, if the video recently shared by the Railways Ministry is anything to go by. The Ministry has shared news of the completion of the hyperloop test track developed by IIT Madras within its campus which, if implemented, will allow a train to travel at more than double the speed of a bullet train. The test track is awaiting trial. Following its success, this rail system could see its implementation on a large scale in the country.

This hyperloop test track is about 410 metres long and is a revolutionary technology with a special vacuum tube in which the train will travel. As per reports, hyperloop trains will travel within the tube at a speed of 1,100 km/hr, whereas the maximum speed of a bullet train is 450 km/h. Therefore, with this hyperloop train track, you could travel from Delhi to Jaipur within 30 minutes.

This high-speed, magnetic levitation (maglev) train uses a low-pressure tube to transport passengers. Coaches will travel at high speeds in a vacuum promising a higher-energy efficiency and safe travel experience. Magnets repel coaches so they hover above the track and propel them forward over the track.

The project is  led by IIT Madras’ Avishkar Hyperloop team, comprising of 76 students, in partnership with TuTr, a startup at the institute, and is funded by the Railways Ministry.
