Udaipur, March 5, 2025 - India and Bhutan are set to get their first-ever railway connection. Indian Railways has announced plans to operate a train from Kokrajhar in Assam, India, to Gelephu in Bhutan. This will be the first railway link between the two neighboring countries.
The train will cover a distance of 69.04 km. The completion of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) marks a significant step in improving connectivity between the two nations. A spokesperson from the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) said that this railway link will enhance India-Bhutan relations by improving trade and tourism.
The project will cost around INR 3,500 crore. It includes six new railway stations at Balajan, Garubhasa, Runikhata, Shantipur, Dadgiri, and Gelephu. The route will have two major bridges, 29 major bridges, 65 minor bridges, one road over-bridge, and 39 road under-bridges.
