Udaipur, January 31, 2025 - Indian airlines have been making significant strides in dominating international air routes. In the first nine months of 2024 nearly ferrying 17.52 million passengers, Indian aviation companies reached a record 47% market share on international routes connected to India, compared to just 34.7% in 2019, before the pandemic.

Shift from Foreign to Indian Airlines
Foreign carriers like Emirates, Etihad Airways, Qatar Airways, and Singapore Airlines have traditionally been the preferred choice for Indian flyers, despite their premium pricing. This preference is largely due to their exceptional service and relatively newer aircraft fleet.
However, this trend has shifted as major Indian airlines, such as Air India, Air India Express and Vistara, expand their fleets and increase the number of international routes.

Air India’s Growth in Long-Haul Markets
Air India is making substantial gains in international travel, particularly on long-haul flights. The airline has doubled its daily international flights from 157 to 313 in just three years. Air India now serves 48 international destinations, up from 39, and aims to strengthen its position in premium traffic segments.

IndiGo’s Expanding International Reach
IndiGo, India's largest airline, has also been increasing its international footprint. In the past two years, it has added 11 new international destinations. The number of flights on IndiGo’s international routes has grown from 26 to 37, with the airline's market share on international routes expected to rise from 20% to 28% by the end of 2024.

The United Arab Emirates remained the top destination for Indian travelers, followed by Saudi Arabia, Singapore, and Thailand. As a result, foreign carriers such as Emirates and Singapore Airlines have deployed their newest and largest aircraft to accommodate the growing demand.

Indian airlines are expected to continue growing their presence in international air travel in the coming years, with an expanding fleet and more destinations.
