April 23, 2026 - Indian Railways has introduced new rules to improve the travel experience for Persons with Disabilities (PwD) passengers. The railway has now allowed passengers holding a valid Unique Disability ID (UDID) Card, issued by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD), to travel in specially designated divyangjan coaches in Mail and Express trains.

This facility will also apply to those eligible for concessional rail fares and who possess valid identification documents, as per railway rules.

Additionally, PwD passengers who possess Divyangjan Card or E-Ticketing Photo Identity Card (EPICS) can avail of concessions on tickets if they have the necessary certification document.

The railway authorities clarified that passengers must have a valid ticket or travel authorisation. There will strict monitoring and stern action will be taken against unauthorised passengers found travelling in coaches reserved for divyang travellers and the said offenders will be penalised under provisions of the Railway Act 1989.

The Railways has also shared that wheelchairs are available at all important stations. Also, around 25% of STD/PCO booths at railway stations have been reserved for PwD passengers.
