Indian Railways Plans 220 km/h High-Speed Trains for 2027-28

Indian Railways approves two new semi high-speed trains with 220 km/h design speed and maximum operating speed of 200 km/h; to run on existing tracks, expanding fast rail network across India

April 13, 2026 - The Indian Railways Ministry is planning to manufacture two high-speed trains with a design speed of up to 220 km/h and maximum operating speed of 200 km/h. This proposal has been approved by the Railway Board as part of its Coach Production Programme for 2027-28.

According to Indian Railways, these next-generation semi high-speed trains will operate on the existing broad gauge tracks, eliminating the need for building separate corridors. Orders have been assigned for these high-speed trainsets to the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai.

As of now, the Vande Bharat Express trains are the fastest in the country, capable of running at speeds of 180 km/h. Currently, India has 81 pairs of Vande Bharat train services (Chair Car) operating across the country.

Indian Railways has intensified its focus on expanding semi high-speed trains across the entire network before rolling out bullet trains. Bullet train require dedicated tracks and heavy investment. The Ministry is currently focusing on developing a network capable of speeds above 200 km/h in a phased manner.

The two trainsets will comprise 16 cars each with a steel body. Initially, each train will be built with eight cars and later expanded to the full 16 coaches.
