Installation of Kavach on Udaipur-Chittorgarh Rail Track in Progress

Work on laying the optical fibre line between Chittorgarh-Udaipur section progressing rapidly and complete till Rana Pratap Nagar station

Udaipur, Nov 22, 2025 - In a major step toward strengthening railway safety in the city, North Western Railway has begun the process of installing a “Kavach”, an indigenous railway protection system. This will help reduce train accidents. In the coming days, trains operating from Udaipur will also be secured with Kavach with work already started on Chittorgarh-Udaipur section.

Kavach is an Indian Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system which has been indigenously developed by Research Designs & Standards Organisation (RDSO). It was adopted by the Ministry of Railways as National ATP system in July 2020 and been developed to prevents collisions between two trains. The installation involves laying fibre cables along the track and installing GPS systems through towers. A device is also set up in each train engine. When two engines approach the same track at high speed, the system automatically applies brakes. It can stop a train even if a signal is not visible. Kavach keeps the locomotive pilot continuously connected with the control room and the signalling system.

According to information, work on laying the optical fibre line between the Chittorgarh-Udaipur section is progressing rapidly. The work has already been completed up to the area near Rana Pratap Nagar station. Under this project, two sets of 48-fibre cables are being laid on both sides of the tracks. The cable-laying work will be completed by the end of December, after which the next phase will begin. Sources said the entire project will take about one year. After that, work will begin on the Udaipur-Ahmedabad track.

After laying the cables, towers will be installed at each station along the route. Their bases will also be constructed. For now, the system will remain manual. In the future, for fully automatic operations, loops are being left along the track to install equipment at every kilometre.

Key Benefits of Kavach

  • Train collision probability becomes almost zero
  • Fewer accidents at unmanned level crossings
  • Increased train speed
  • Safe train operations even in fog and bad weather
  • System functions even in cases of human error
  • Facilitates high-speed train operations

The Ministry of Railways is working on rapid implementation of Kavach across 2,000 km of track following the allocation of funds in the FY 2022-23 Union Budget. Its implementation along 34,000 km track of the Golden Quadrilateral rail route has been sanctioned and is to be implemented by 2027-2028.
