Udaipur, January 9, 2025 - The government plans to make domestic airlines share weather data captured during takeoffs and landings with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). This could lead to much better weather forecasts. IMD uses weather balloons launched from 50-60 stations to collect data on temperature, humidity, and wind speed at different heights.
Over 6,000 flights take off and land in India every day. Planes gather weather data during these takeoffs and landings using special sensors. If airlines share this data, it will add a lot more information for weather forecasting.
Weather forecasts improve when there’s more data.
Planes can gather data over a wider area than weather balloons. This helps predict storms, rainfall, and other weather changes more accurately.
International flights already share weather data because it’s mandatory in most countries.
Domestic airlines in India don’t have to share it yet, but the government wants to make this a rule.
Planes use systems like Aircraft Meteorological Data Relay (AMDAR) to measure and send weather information in real time.
If this becomes mandatory, it will help both airline operations and weather predictions across India.
