Middle East Airspace Shut, Thousands Stranded Around the World

Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria and the UAE among those that announced at least partial closures of their skies

March 2, 2026 - Tens of thousands of travellers are stranded in airports across the Middle East and around the world with the airspace shut over major Gulf countries in the wake of the ongoing war in the region. Major airlines have suspended flights to and from several destinations in West Asia.

As of Monday (March 2), Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria and the UAE were among those that announced at least partial closures of their skies. According to flight tracking website Flightradar24,  currently more than 2,000 flights to and from seven key airports in the Gulf area have been cancelled. These airports are in Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Kuwait, Bahrain and Jebel Ali.

Air India, IndiGo, Akasa Air, Qatar Airways, Emirates Airlines, Etihad are among the airlines that have announced suspension of services. According to reports, around 100 flights (60 departures and 40 arrivals) were cancelled at IGI Airport while Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport saw 125 flights (67 departures and 58 arrivals) being cancelled.

Indian embassies across the world are in touch with nationals who have been stranded in the Middle East region since the US-Israel war on Iran broke out.
