There are 5 NHAI Toll Booths circling Udaipur.

Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, has declared the implementation of a new Satellite Based Toll Collection System across select highways in India. He announced this in a written reply at the Rajya Sabha.

GNSS Toll Collection

Gadkari said that the new toll collection system has already been successfully tested on two highways, one in Bengaluru (Bengaluru - Mysore section on NH 275) and the other in Hissar (Panipat - Hissar section  of NH 709). Titled the GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System), will be implemented at select Highways across India and will gradually replace the legacy traditional toll collecting system.

Toll collection booths and then the implementation of FASTag have been the traditional toll collection systems in India. However, the GNSS will initially function alongside the FASTag system. The deduction of Toll is done by deducting the money from the  FASTag account, but in GNSS, it will be done directly from the  bank account of the registered vehicle owner, depending on the distance travelled, making it a more cost effective way of collecting toll and reducing the wait time on highways along with associated costs of toll booth construction and operations. The GNSS will function in parallel to FASTag and users will not be forced to switch immediately, but gradually.

60km Rule

Vehicle owners will be provided passes on the basis of their Aadhar Cards. These passes will ensure that no Toll is collected if the vehicle owner resides within 60km of a toll booth. The Union Minister further informed that the minimum distance between two toll plazas will be 60km. If there is an additional plaza within 60km of another, it will be shut down. This process and its implementation will be done with in three months.

  • One Vehicle One FASTag.
  • The  fee (toll) at a Plaza is determined by the length of the road (distance between two Toll Plazas), structures such as bridges or tunnels, the width of highway, the concession terms and applicable toll fee regulations. Further, vehicles are classifed based on size and purpose (whether commercial or private).
