Airports near Indo-Pak border and key Air Force bases remain shut due to heightened military operations; Passengers urged to check flight status before departure
May 8, 2025 - Flight operations across north, west and central India have severely been impacted by Operation Sindoor leading to flight cancellations and airports shutdown. Around 27 Indian airports have been closed for civil flight operations until 5:29 am May 10 and about 430 flights were cancelled for today, May 8.
Airports impacted are close to the Indo-Pak border or located at important Indian Air Force bases. May 7’s flight tracking data showed little civilian aircraft activity north of Delhi and in much of Rajasthan and Gujarat.
Airlines such as Air India, IndiGo, SpiceJet, Air India Express, Akasa Air and several foreign carriers have suspended flights. IndiGo and Air India cancelled all their flights to and from airports in North India, including Srinagar, Jammu, Amritsar, Leh, Chandigarh, Bikaner, Jodhpur and Dharamshala till May 10. Air India has suspended flight operations to and from Jammu, Srinagar, Leh, Jodhpur, Amritsar, Bhuj, Jamnagar, Chandigarh and Rajkot till May 10.
Reports say that Delhi Airport witnessed a number of flights being cancelled with as many as 65 arriving and 66 departing flights at Indira Gandhi International Airport. Two departing and two arriving international flights were also cancelled. American Airlines cancelled its Delhi-New York flight yesterday, May 7.
In a statement on X, the Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), which operates the IGIA, has said, “All operations across terminals and all 4 runways at Delhi airport, continue to function normally. However, there have been impact on some flights due to changing airspace.”
Passengers have been advised by airlines to check flight status before leaving for the airport. Refund and rescheduling options are being offered, as per sources.
