-Though the dates of operation were changed 4 times in the pandemic era, yet the royal train did not receive bookings in tourist season in 2020-21.
-It is being expected that the 2021-22 will prove to be good as 50 percent bookings have received from foreign tourists.
A lot of trains and flights had to be cancelled in the wake of corona. Travel and tourism industry suffered huge losses but it could not be helped. The royal train known as Palace on Wheels also got affected as it did not receive the required bookings for operation.
RTDC advanced the operation dates 4 times as even after offering a 30 percent discount; the train could not attract domestic tourists. Since there were no foreign tourists in the pandemic times, the train booking did not even meet the required number of passengers for being on track.
Palace on Wheels can be operated if it receives at least 27 bookings. RTDC reduced the tariff, introduced special packages but since the daily tariff is more than 34000 rupees, it could not attract more than 6 bookings in 2020-21. The dates were advanced 4 times but the fifth time instead of advancing the dates of operation, the department decided to cancel the train until the next tourist season. Now that the train has been booked to the extent of 50 percent by foreign tourists, it is likely to be operated in the tourist season beginning September 2021 to April 2022.
The packages offered for the Palace on Wheels are:
3 nights: Delhi- Agra- Sawai Madhopur- Jaipur- Delhi
4 nights: Delhi-Jaipur-Udaipur-Sawai Madhopur-Agra-Delhi
7-8 days: Delhi-Jaipur-Sawai Madhopur-Chittorgarh-Udaipur-Jaisalmer-Jodhpur-Bharatpur-Agra-Delhi
The train first went on tracks in 1982. It has 14 AC coaches. There are 2 restaurants- Maharaja and Maharani and passengers can avail five star facilities of hotel along with bar, spa, saloon, gym in this train.
