Showcasing the history and development of comics and cartoons in Malaysia from the mid 1930s till date, the small but fun filled and colorful building Malaysia Cartoon and Comic House is located at Taman Cotani Perdana – Kuala Lumpur Lake Gardens. This building was opened to public visits in April 2017.
Thousands of cartoons and comic scripts are displayed across this small building – most of them being hand drawn before the advent of technology. Vitage artworks of the early days, almost a century ago, are marked as National Treasures. They speak much about the ancient culture of Malaysia.
In an interaction with Udaipur Times, Ahmed Hilmi, the chief curator at the Comic house said that the cartoons are mostly in Bahasa, the Malaysian dialect with a few being in English. He said that the Japanese and British used cartoons as a way of winning the hearts of the locals…and that is how the culture set in.

Udaipur Times also interacted with Tazidi Yusuf, who is also a curator and a cartoonist himself. He showed us the Gila Gila works, which are the Malaysian equivalent of Mad Magazine. Many of the works of Datuk Lat, one of Malaysia’s famous cartoonists is also on display at the gallery.
All in all a place worthy of a short visit, while in Kuala Lumpur.
