Udaipur Train Update

Udaipur, May 21, 2025 - The formal inauguration and dedication of the electrified Udaipur-Ahmedabad broad-gauge railway track will be conducted virtually by Prime Minister Narendra Modi tomorrow, May 22, during an event organised in Bikaner. Notably, four trains are already operating on this track using electric engines.

The electrification work on the 299-kilometre track between Udaipur and Ahmedabad began in March 2022 and was completed in December 2024 at a total cost of Rs 210 crore.

Currently, of the total nine trains operating on the Udaipur-Ahmedabad route, four are being run using electric engines. These include the Jaipur-Asarwa-Jaipur, Indore-Asarwa-Indore, Kota-Asarwa-Kota and Agra-Asarwa-Agra trains.

With PM Modi’s virtual inauguration, there is now renewed hope for the commencement of new trains from Udaipur to Mumbai and southern India via Ahmedabad. There is also growing anticipation for the launch of the Udaipur-Ahmedabad Vande Bharat Express.

What is delaying the train connectivity from Udaipur to Mumbai and South India via Ahmedabad?

Although the electrification work has been completed, the launch of train services from Udaipur to Mumbai and South India via Ahmedabad is currently held up owing to redevelopment work being carried out at several smaller stations between Asarwa Junction and the main Ahmedabad railway station, Kalupur - a 5-kilometre stretch. Additionally, on-going construction work at Kalupur station has rendered some platforms unusable. As a result, no new trains are being introduced at Kalupur station for now. Only after the completion of these works can the people of Mewar expect new trains from Udaipur to Mumbai and South India via Ahmedabad.
