Rail Fare Hike Effective from Dec 26
Second class travel up to 215 km remains unchanged; revised rates apply to tickets issued from December 26
Dec 26, 2025 – The increase in railway fares will come into effect from Friday (December 26). The Ministry of Railways has announced a fare hike of one paisa per kilometre for journeys beyond suburban areas in ordinary sleeper class and first-class general fares, while fares in other classes have also been increased by one paisa per kilometre.
This hike in ticket prices is for the second time in six months.
The Railways has clarified that there will be no fare increase for second-class ordinary journeys up to 215 kilometres. Thus, short-distance travellers and daily commuters are not affected.
The fare hike will not apply to tickets already booked, even if the date of travel is later. However, revised fares will apply to tickets issued by TTEs or booking staff from December 26 onwards. According to the GST applicability remains unchanged, and fares will continue to be rounded off according to prevailing norms.
The Ministry explained the hike as aimed at “balancing affordability for passengers and sustainability of operations".
Fare Hike
Second Class Ordinary
- Up to 215 km: No increase
- 216-750 km: Rs 5 increase
- 751-1,250 km: Rs 10 increase
- 1,251-1,750 km: Rs 15 increase
- 1,751-2,250 km: Rs 20 increase
Sleeper Class Ordinary, First Class Ordinary
- 1 paisa per km has been increased
Mail and Express trains
2 paise per kilometre has been increased across non-AC and AC classes, including Sleeper Class, First Class, AC Chair Car, AC 3-Tier, AC 2-Tier and AC First Class. This translates into Rs 10 extra for a 500-km journey in non-AC Mail/Express coaches.
