June 21, 2025 - Indian Railways has decided to limit the number of waiting list tickets on trains to make travel more convenient and comfortable. According to this decision, the number of waiting list tickets will be restricted to 25% of the train’s capacity. Waiting tickets will be issued up to a maximum of 25% of the total seats available in AC First Class, AC Second, AC Third, Sleeper and Chair Car coaches.

According to railways officials, usually about 20 to 25 percent of waiting list tickets get confirmed by the time the chart is prepared. Based on this, the new limit has been set so that passengers do not face too much trouble regarding ticket confirmation.

The new system is being implemented in different railway zones after a circular was issued by the Railways Board. This will increase the chances of waiting list passengers getting their tickets confirmed and also avoid overcrowding on trains. This rule has been made keeping in mind various quotas like seats reserved for divyangjan, senior citizens and women.

Currently, the railway issues up to 30 waiting tickets in AC First Class, 100 in AC Second, 300 in AC Third and 400 in Sleeper Class. Because of this, passengers often worry about their ticket confirmation until the last moment. And if the ticket is not confirmed, it disrupts their travel plans.

According the officials, this rule will be applicable on all categories of trains including Rajdhani, Duronto, Shatabdi, Superfast trains and Mail plus Express.
