Railways: Original ID Proof Mandatory in Reserved Coaches

Indian Railways now requires at least one passenger in a reserved coach to carry original ID proof; else the entire group may be treated as ticketless if rule is violated

Feb 11, 2026 - Indian Railways has taken a strict stance on identity verification of passengers during travel. The Railway Board has clearly said in its order that while travelling in reserved categories, at least one passenger must carry an original identity card. If this condition is not met, the entire group may be treated as traveling without a valid ticket which could lead to fines or other action.

Accepted IDs include passport, voter ID, driving license, PAN Card, Aadhaar, bank passbook (with photo), student ID (recognised), and government issued photo ID, with digital versions like e-Aadhaar or DigiLocker documents also often accepted.

Identity checks during the journey will be implemented strictly.

Additionally, the Railways made it mandatory for passengers traveling under concessions or special quota categories to present valid identity proof. This will help confirm their eligibility and claims.

The intent behind this rule is to expose fake tickets, false identities and reduce security-related risks. It will also enhance passenger safety and transparency and curb the entry of antisocial elements into train coaches.

The Railway Board has directed the Chief Commercial Managers of all zonal railways to ensure strict compliance with these rules. Extra vigilance has been advised, especially on routes connected to international borders such as the India–Nepal and India–Bangladesh corridors.

“It is desired that these instructions may be reiterated to all concerned for strict compliance especially in the areas serving the international borders e.g. Indo-Nepal, Indo Bangladesh, etc,” the Railway Board said in a circular dated February 6, 2026.
