Railways Moves to Automated Chart Preparation 8 Hours Before Departure

The Railway Board issued orders on November 18 to all zonal railways to permanently automate the process in the railway software

Udaipur, Nov 24, 2025 - After operating manually for three months, the Indian Railways has now permanently implemented the system of preparing reservation charts eight hours before train departure across the country. The Railway Board issued orders on November 18 to all zonal railways to permanently automate the process in the railway software. The Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) has been directed to make the necessary modifications to the software.

From now on, these charts will be generated automatically through the booking system.

The Ministry of Railways had introduced a trial system three months ago, shifting chart preparation to eight hours prior to departure. During this period, the Railway Board monitored whether passengers or railway staff faced any difficulties under the revised system.

Passenger Benefits

  • This will allow passengers to know their seat availability in advance.
  • If a ticket remains on the Waiting List even after the chart is prepared, passengers get enough time to plan alternative travel options.
  • If a passenger decides to travel at short notice — say 8-10 hours before departure — and seats are still available after the chart is generated, they can purchase a current ticket without paying any extra amount and board the train.
  • This system will increase railway efficiency.
