Railways to Charge for Excess Baggage; Know Details
Passengers will now have to pay extra for luggage exceeding prescribed weight and size limits, says Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw
Dec 19, 2025 - The Indian Railways has introduced baggage rules similar to that followed by airlines. The Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has said that railway passengers will now have to pay charges for baggage exceeding the prescribed limits. Making this announcement in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday (December 17), the Minister said that these charges are aimed at enhancing passenger safety and comfort plus reduce cabin congestion.
The Rules
- Passengers travelling in Second Class are allowed to carry 35 kg of luggage free of cost and up to 70 kg on a chargeable basis.
- For Sleeper Class passengers, the free allowance is 40 kg with a maximum permissible limit of 80 kg.
- Passengers travelling in AC 3 Tier or Chair Car are permitted a free allowance of 40 kg, which is also the maximum limit.
- First Class and AC 2 Tier passengers are permitted to carry 50 kg of luggage free of cost and up to 100 kg as the maximum limit.
- AC First Class passengers can carry 70 kg free of cost and up to 150 kg on a chargeable basis.
As per the new baggage limitations, any luggage exceeding these maximum limits will not be allowed in the coach and will have to be booked separately in the brake van (SLR) or parcel van.
Apart from the weight, the size of the bags will also matter. Trunks, suitcases and boxes must not exceed 100 cm x 60 cm x 25 cm. Anything bigger than the prescribed size limit will not be allowed inside the compartment.
Additionally, henceforth business or commercial goods will have to be booked through parcel services and will not be allowed as personal items in the compartment.
