New Delhi, August 21, 2025 – Until now, air travellers have had to pay extra charges for carrying luggage beyond the allowed limit. Now, train passengers will also have to pay additional charges for carrying luggage beyond the prescribed limit. Although this rule already exists in the railway system, it will now be enforced more strictly.

Similar to air travel, train passengers will now have to go through the process of their luggage being weighed using electronic scales.

According to media reports, this system will initially be implemented at stations such as Delhi NCR, Prayagraj Junction, Kanpur Central, Mirzapur, Tundla, Aligarh Junction and Etawah. Later, it will be extended to all railway stations across the country.

Current luggage weight limits set by Indian Railways:

  • AC First Class – 70 kg
  • AC 2-Tier – 50 kg
  • AC 3-Tier and Sleeper Class – 40 kg
  • General Class – 35 kg

Additionally, oversized luggage will incur separate charges.
