Railways to the Rescue After IndiGo Mass Cancellations
Railways prepares to handle 35,000 passengers per day with added capacity; other carriers raise fares up to 10 times amid surge in demand
Dec 6, 2025 - After more than 1,700 flights of IndiGo were cancelled in the past few days, the Indian Railways has rushed to the rescue of stranded passenger and on Friday added 116 extra coaches to 37 trains across multiple zones. These include 114 scheduled trips with various coach types as per route demand and carrying up to 4,000 passengers on each trip. Northern Railways also is operating five special trains to cope with the passenger traffic.
In all, the arrangements are expected to handle 35,000 passengers per day, ensuring connectivity for nearly 26 lakh passengers during a time when passengers are looking for alternative transport in the face of flight delays and cancellations by India’s biggest airline.
The South Central Railway announced it would run four special trains to manage the surge. A press release from the SCR said it is running the special trains to clear the extra rush of passengers to Chennai, Mumbai and Shalimar (Kolkata) from Hyderabad on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the Civil Aviation Ministry has said that flights are expected to begin stabilising by Saturday and return to normal soon. “Full restoration of services is expected within the next three days. Passengers will receive full refunds for cancelled flights and necessary assistance in case of delays,” said Ram Mohan Naidu, Civil Aviation Minister.
Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has exempted IndiGo from its Flight Duty Time Limit (FDTL) orders giving it time until February 10, 2026. The government has ordered a high-level investigation into the matter and said accountability will be fixed.
IndiGo says that normal operations may take until December 15 to resume. The airline suspended all departures from the Delhi airport for the entire day to reboot its systems and stop the delays which were continuing to add up. It cancelled all its domestic flights from Chennai airport and all flights from Bengaluru to Delhi and Mumbai for the entire day.
Owing to IndiGo Airline’s mass cancellations, other airlines sharply increased fares for domestic flights. Ticket prices rose up to ten times, yet seats were unavailable. As per reports, shockingly the Delhi-Bengaluru fare shot up to Rs 1 lakh on Friday night in comparison with the Rs 25,000 for the Delhi-London route fare.
On the back of such reports, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has issued an official directive to all airlines mandating strict adherence to the fare caps that have now been prescribed and which will remain in place till the crisis is over.
