Udaipur, Feb 23, 2026 - Contract and stage carriage bus operators across Rajasthan have announced a statewide strike starting the midnight of Monday (February 23). The operators are protesting against the Transport Department’s “unjust” action against alleged illegal operation of private buses.

Rajendra Sharma, president of the All Rajasthan Contract Carriage Bus Operators Association, said that the Transport Department is taking action against operators in violation of rules and is applying provisions of the new Motor Vehicles Act to older buses. The department is imposing fines of up to Rs 1 lakh. Moreover, passengers are being forced to get off midway during their journey.

The bus operators have announced that after 12 midnight today, nearly 40,000 buses across the State will stop operating. The strike will include around 30,000 private stage carriage buses operating on public transport and other routes, along with 10,000 sleeper coach buses.

Online ticket bookings for travel between February 23 and February 28 have been suspended. Approximately 1.5 million passengers who rely on private buses are expected to be affected.

"If passenger bookings are made on buses connected to Rajasthan through any platform after midnight on February 23, 2026, the entire responsibility will be of the respective online booking company," stated a release issued by the All Rajasthan Contact Carriage Bus Operators Association two days ago.The operators have claimed that apart from Rajasthan, operators in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat will also support the protest against the action taken by the Rajasthan Transport Department.

Rajasthan Bus Operators Association president Satyanarayan Sahu has said that bus operators in Rajasthan and other States will park buses mid-route to block highways as part of the protest.

Prem Chand Bairwa, Deputy Chief Minister and Transport Minister has urged bus operators to avoid going on strike and instead move toward a solution through discussions.
