Indian Railways Approves Major Projects for Rajasthan
Approval given for Rs 871 crore railway modernisation projects in Rajasthan, Bengal and Kerala; new coach maintenance facilities in Sri Ganganagar and Lalgarh will strengthen Vande Bharat and LHB train operations
Feb 27, 2026 - The Railways Ministry has approved several important projects worth Rs 871 crore to modernise the railway network across three zones with special focus on Rajasthan. Apart from Rajasthan, the projects will also include Kerala and West Bengal.
The projects for Rajasthan will enhance railway operational capacity in the State and strengthen the operation of modern trains. They are expected to increase the possibility of launching new train services and provide better facilities to passengers in the region.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw described the approvals as major infrastructure boost for the railways.
Modern coach maintenance facilities will be developed in Sri Ganganagar and Lalgarh, at a cost of around Rs 314 crore. These projects will significantly strengthen the operation and maintenance of modern trains such as Vande Bharat and LHB coaches.
At Sri Ganganagar station in Rajasthan, a state-of-the-art coach maintenance facility will be developed at a cost of Rs 174.26 crore under Phase-1. Under this project, washing lines, pit lines, stabling lines, an engine escape line and modern machinery will be installed. Once operational, the facility will be able to maintain six additional rakes daily, helping introduce new train services and improve existing ones.
Considering the rising number of Vande Bharat and LHB trains in the Bikaner region, the coach depot at Lalgarh will be expanded at a cost of Rs 139.68 crore under Phase-II. The project includes the installation of a new washing line, covered shed, service building and an automatic coach washing plant, which will increase train maintenance capacity.
Additionally, the approved work at Sri Ganganagar includes construction of two 600 metre washing lines, three 650 metre stabling lines, two pit lines, one wheel lathe line and a 650 metre engine escape line. Additionally, a 120 metre by 24 metre sick line shed will be constructed.
In Kerala, Indian Railways has sanctioned the doubling of the 21.10-kilometre Turavur–Mararikulam section of Southern Railway at a cost of Rs 450.59 crore.
In West Bengal, construction of the 4.75-km Kalipahari Bypass Line under Eastern Railway has been approved at a cost of Rs 107.10 crore to address operational constraints in the Asansol area.
