Udaipur, February 27, 2025 - NWR is introducing the ‘Rakshak’ system, a handheld device that alerts track maintainers about approaching trains. It works on a Very High Frequency (VHF) system and will be given to all track maintainers. The ‘Rakshak’ system will first be introduced in Jaipur and Ajmer divisions. Later, it will be expanded to the Bikaner and Jodhpur divisions.

How ‘Rakshak’ Works?

Before a train arrives, the station master sends an advance signal. The VHF transmitter then alerts all handheld devices in the area through sound and vibrations. This will help track maintainers stay alert and prevent accidents.

Why This Technology is Needed?

In November 2024, a tragic accident occurred near Shoranur, where workers were run over by a train. Such incidents highlight the dangers faced by track maintainers. On average, over 80 track maintainers die in train accidents across India every year, with around six deaths in the North Western Railway zone alone.

Railway Officials Speak

NWR General Manager Amitabh stated that the work of track maintainers is very risky. He emphasized that this new system will help prevent accidents and improve safety for the 9,775 track maintainers in NWR, including over 1,500 in the Ajmer division.
