Udaipur, March 7,2025 - The Union Cabinet has approved two major ropeway projects in Uttarakhand to improve access to the holy sites of Kedarnath and Hemkund Sahib. These ropeways will be developed under the Parvatmala Pariyojana. The total cost of both projects is Rs 6,811 crore. They will be built under the PPP model, where private companies will design, build, finance, operate, and later transfer the ropeways.
One ropeway will connect Govindghat to Hemkund Sahib Ji, and the other will run from Sonprayag to Kedarnath. These projects aim to make travel easier for pilgrims who currently trek long distances to reach these destinations.
At present, devotees have to undertake a 21 km uphill trek to reach Hemkund Sahib, while the journey to Kedarnath requires a 16 km trek from Gaurikund. The ropeways will reduce travel time and offer a more comfortable journey.
The Govindghat to Hemkund Sahib ropeway will have two sections: Monocable Gondola and Tricable Gondola. It will have a capacity of 11,000 passengers per day.
These ropeways are expected to boost religious tourism and provide a safer and faster travel option for pilgrims.
