Revenues for the luxury royal trains covering popular tourist destinations in Rajasthan have been tumbling for the last 3 years. This was revealed in a report released by Railways.

Two luxury trains operate in Rajasthan – Palace on Wheels (POW) and Royal Rajasthan on Wheels (RROW). These trains are being run to lure foreign tourists in Rajasthan. The trains however have shown a seious drop in revenue over the last three years.

As per the report released by Railways, the occupancy of Palace on Wheels was 2024 passengers in 2014-15. It dropped to 1739 in the year 2015-16 and further down to 1373 in 2016-17.

The revenues of POW and RROW dropped by 24.08% and 63.18% respectively.

While Indian Railways handles responsibility related to train operation, the Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation has the responsibility to market the train and improve occupancy.

Report cited limited number of trips as one of the reasons for low revenue generation.

Palace on Wheels covers itineraries including New Delhi, Jaipur, Sawai Madhopur, Chittorgarh, Udaipur, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Bharatpur and Agra. Royal Rajasthan, on the other hand, runs the circuit of New Delhi, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Chittorgarh, Sawai Madhopur, Jaipur, Khajuraho, Varanasi and Agra.
