May 5, 2025 - Union Minister Ramdas Athawale, Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, has announced a proposal to build an airport in Sikkim to boost tourism. Athawale, who is in Sikkim on a two-day visit, said this in a media conference adding that the Centre was committed to the overall progress of the State.

The State BJP has been for long calling for an all-weather international airport in Sikkim to boost tourism. A new airport would address the current challenges faced by the Pakyong airport, the only one in the State. It often faces low visibility issues and adverse weather conditions leading to frequent flight cancellations and closure of services for months. This has negatively impacted the tourism industry of this scenic Himalayan state.

Once the new airport comes up it is expected to enhance air access, boost visitor numbers and also allow Sikkim to become a more integral part of north-east India’s transport infrastructure.
