Udaipur, November 15, 2024 - The responsibility for the Mahseer Conservation Reserve in Udaipur's Badi Lake has now been assigned to the Northern Territorial Forest Division, shifting from the Wildlife Division. This division will handle the conservation and development efforts for the Mahseer fish, a species found in Badi Lake, the only lake in Rajasthan where these fish are still found.

Northern Forest Division to Promote Conservation and Tourism

The Northern Forest Division has been chosen for this project due to its resources and ideal location. Efforts are underway to protect the Mahseer fish population and turn them into an attraction for tourists. The division’s Eco-Tone Park, located along Badi Lake's edge, provides a scenic viewpoint where visitors can enjoy views of both Bahubali Hills and Badi Pal, further enhancing the park's appeal.

Special Ponds for Fish Breeding

To boost the Mahseer population, small ponds will be constructed along the park's edge for breeding. Young fish will be raised in these ponds and, once they mature, released into the lake to increase the population naturally. The shallow water near the park also makes it easier for tourists to spot the fish.

Ticketing Remains with Wildlife Department

Although the conservation responsibility has shifted, the ticket counter and management of Badi Lake’s embankment will remain with the Wildlife Department. Initially, there were plans to assign the conservation reserve to the Wildlife Department due to its proximity to Sajjangarh Sanctuary.

Conservation Status

Last year, on October 7, Badi Lake was officially declared a conservation reserve, covering an area of 206.350 hectares. This move aimed to protect the Mahseer species, once commonly found in all lakes and rivers of Udaipur but now restricted to Badi Lake due to pollution.
