Swiss Flight Engine Catches Fire During Take-Off in Delhi; Passengers Safe
A Swiss Air flight aborted takeoff at Delhi Airport after engine failure caused fire; all 232 passengers safe; investigation underway into the incident.
April 27, 2026 – A major aircraft incident was averted on Saturday (April 25) night at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi when one of the engines of Swiss Air Flight LX-147 failed and caught fire during take-off. The pilot acted swiftly and immediately aborted the take-off and evacuated the passengers using emergency slides on the runway. All passengers were reported safe although six passengers received some injury because of the panic situation and were admitted to hospital. A cabin crew member was also reported to have suffered a sprained ankle.
The blaze was brought under control and the aircraft was moved to a safe location.
The Airbus A330 model, which had a total of 232 passengers, including four infants, and 13 crew members, was flying from New Delhi to Zurich. It has reached a speed of 104 knots (about 193 kmph) on the take-off roll around when engine number one failed. Delhi Airport immediately declared a “full emergency”.
India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Board (AAIB) has started an investigation into the incident which could have become a major accident if not for timely action.
This is the second major aircraft-related incident at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport in the last 10 days. On April 16, a SpiceJet Boeing 737-700 taxiing and Akasa Air collided with a stationary Akasa Air aircraft. The Akasa aircraft was ready to depart for Hyderabad, when a SpiceJet aircraft arriving from Leh hit it. Both the aircraft suffered damages.
