Tourists to Jaisalmer Will Now Have to Pay ‘Passenger Tax’

Jaisalmer Municipal Council introduces a passenger tax on tourist vehicles after 22 years; entry gates on Jodhpur and Barmer roads to collect Rs 50-Rs 200 based on vehicle type

Jan 24, 2026 - The Jaisalmer Nagar Parishad has decided to levy a “passenger tax” on tourist vehicles. Approval has been received from the Department of Autonomous Governance, according to Municipal Commissioner Lajpal Singh Sodha, and a gazette notification will be issued soon. 

This passenger tax will come again after a gap of 22 years.

The Nagar Parishad has decided to establish entry points at two major routes. Two toll points will be established where most tourist vehicles enter Jaisalmer. One entry gate will be on Jodhpur Road, where most tourists coming from Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Bikaner enter. The second entry gate will be on Barmer Road.

The passenger tax has been set between Rs 50 and Rs 200 depending on the type of vehicle. Buses will be charged Rs 200, tempo travellers Rs 150 and cars Rs 50-100.
